Why does the space shuttle never fly over the North or South poles? Steve Kiecker
The Space Shuttle has gone as high as 57 degrees latitude, however, it requires much more
energy to go up to the higher latitudes. Launching straight East from Florida uses the Earth's
rotation to provide the spaceship with a free velocity of 1200 feet per second. The higher in
latitude, the more rotation velocity is lost.
