Do career astronauts earn on the order of sports stars, actors, actresses, and the like?

No, they do not. We are paid about the same as a NASA engineer. There is not a category called astronauts within the civil service agency, you are an aerospace technologist. That is my classification in terms of the pay scale.

And there are not additional bonuses either. There are no benefits beyond those that any other aerospace technologist or engineers could have.
